Charles E. Smith provides real estate management services and financing primarily in the Washington D.C. area. It was founded in 1946 and became publicly traded as a REIT on the NYSE in 1994. They merged with Archstone Communities of Denver in 2001 and became Archstone-Smith Trust. It was taken over by Tishman Speyer and Lehman Brothers in 2007. Charles E. Smith was a trustee of George Washington University, the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center is named in his honor.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued.
