Description

This rare find is from 1858, just eight years after California became a state. This bond is from the City and County of San Francisco and was issue shortly after the San Francisco Fire of 1851, we believe as part of a rebuilding effort. The fire destroyed over 2000 buildings in downtown San Francisco. This bond also managed to survive the devastating earthquake of 1906 and the subsequent fire that killed over 3000 people and destroyed over 80% of the city.

The handwriting on the top left says,"This bond surrendered by the commission of the traded debt of 1851 and cancelled Sept 18 1871 by Thomas H. Selby Mayor".
