This rare Northern Pacific Railroad Company stock certificate was from the 1880s and is signed by President Frederick Billings. The vignette features the engraved portrait of Frederick Billings. The company was founded by an Act of Congress, signed by President Lincoln in 1864 making it the largest land grant in American history. Much of its route was determined by the Lewis and Clark expedition and was America's second trans-continental railroad.

Frederick Billings was a 49er traveling to California in search of gold. He became one of the wealthiest men in California and reorganized the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1873. Billings, Montana was named after him.

The Northern Pacific Railroad was one of the original members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Added July 3, 1884. Hand signed.
