Description

John Pickering & Moseley was founded by John Pickering in 1849 whose Grandfather, Timothy Pickering, served in President George Washington's Cabinet and also as Secretary of State. Pickering was one of the oldest members of the Boston Stock Exchange. Charles Moseley joined the firm in 1870 and operated the firm upon Pickering's death in 1882. Charles Moseley was admitted to the NYSE in 1880 and the Boston Stock Exchange in 1888.

The firm occupied the "Old Union Building" at 40 State Street in Boston for over 40 years. John Pickering and Moseley was one of the oldest brokerage houses in Boston. It was said that, "No brokerage house stands higher in financial circles or can look back on a career extending over half a century with more pardonable pride than that of John Pickering & Moseley of 40 State Street."

This trade ticket from 1881 is for 100 U.S. 4% notes for G.H. Hull Jr. It is hand signed John Pickering Moseley.
