This rare American Express Company stock certificate was issued to Robert H. James of Lockport, NY and signed by president James C. Fargo in 1891. Features the Amex Safety and Dispatch Dog Mascot. .

James C. Fargo served as president of American Express for 30 years and was the brother of Founder William Fargo. James was appointed as superintendent of Virginia operations when Wells Fargo was founded and later promoted to General Superintendent of the Northwest Division. He later moved to New York to serve as the General Manager of American Express. After the death of his brother William, he became president in 1881.

Robert H. James was the owner of the SCBJ amateur radio station and his home at 157 High Street in Lockport is on the Nation Register of Historic Places.

American Express was founded by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo and J.W. Butterfield in 1850 in Buffalo, NY. Just two years later, Wells and Fargo would also start Wells Fargo & Co. Together they founded two of the most iconic companies in American History.
