Description Extended Information

The oldest stock certificate in the world was issued by the Dutch East India Company in 1606. This very rare reproduction of the 1606 Dutch East India Company Stock Certificate was painstakingly recreated by NYSE Euronext. It was printed in 2006 and given to employees in 2007 to celebrate the merger of the NYSE with Euronext. It was exclusively made to mark this occasion by the only wind-powered paper mill in the Netherlands that still makes paper by hand using rags and 17th century methods. Each certificate has a unique serial number (embossed lower right) and its own distinguishing handmade features. This is certificate 01215.

This Dutch East India Stock Certificate will also come with the original letter from the NYSE Euronext. It is hand-signed by the Chairman of Euronext Amsterdam - Joost van der Does de Willebois.

There are only 7 known stock certificates of the Dutch East India Company with the latest just discovered in 2015 in the Amsterdam City Archives. This certificate, issued to Dirck Pietersz Straetmaker on December 8, 1606, was long considered the oldest stock certificate in the world and is actually quite famous. Besides it own historical significance, this certificate was the target of George Clooney and Brad Pitt in the movie Ocean's Twelve. We believe they borrowed the share from the Amsterdam Stock Exchange to make this reproduction.

The Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or VOC) was the world's first multinational company and issued shares to help finance their shipbuilding and trading expeditions. The VOC backed explorer Henry Hudson who claimed Manhattan for the Netherlands in 1609 and called it New Amsterdam. It was later renamed New York. Trading of VOC shares lead to the worlds first stock exchange. Original stock certificates from the Dutch East India Company have auctioned for over $1,000,000.
