Description Extended Information

In 1880 the French began digging a canal across the Isthmus of Panama. After 20 years of work the project was a failure due to disease and financial problems. Over 20,000 men were lost and it cost over $287,000,000. Disease was largly to blame for the failure as malaria and yellow fever plagued the workers. With facsimile signature of Ferdinand De Lesseps who developed the Suez Canal in 1869. The project was bought out by the United States and was completed in 1914.

This 1888 French Panama Canal Bond Certificate is a great piece of history. Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interoceanique de Panama, with facsimile signature of Ferdinand De Lesseps. Four revenue coupons still attached.
