Description Extended Information

This rare Zenith Radio Corporation Specimen stock certificate was printed in the 1960s

The Zenith Radio Corporation was founded in Chicago in 1918 and incorporated in 1923 as a manufacturer of amateur radio equipment. The name Zenith came from a play on the founders ham radio call sign. The innovative company became known for high quality radio and produced the first portable radio in 1924 as well as many other radio innovations.

They later expanded to product televisions and VCRs and eventually computers in the late 70s and subsequently changed their name to the Zenith Electronics Corporation to reflect their diverse product offering. They eventually filed for bankruptcy in 1999 and were taken over by LG.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
