The Sylvania Company traces it's history back to the Hygrade Lamp Company. Frank Poor purchased the Merrit Manufacturing Co in 1901 which repaired burnt out light bulbs and renamed it the Bay State Lamp Company. In 1909 they founded the company Hygrade Incandescent Lamp Company and Walter E. Poor would be its chief engineer. In 1931 Hygrade merged with Nilco and Sylvania to become the Hygrade Sylvania Corporation and sold incandescent bulbs under the Hygrade brand while selling radio tubes as Sylvania. In 1942 the Hygrade name was dropped and the company became Sylvania Electric Products, Inc.
