GM Hughes Electronics Corporation was formed in 1985 when GM won a secretive sealed bid auction to buy Hughes Aircraft from Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Howard Hughes donated Hughes Aircraft to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1953 allegedly to avoid paying taxes on it's income. In 1995 Hughes Electronics was the largest supplier of commercial satellites and eventually became DirectTV.
