Description Extended Information

This rare American Express Company stock certificate was signed by founder John Butterfield and his partner William G. Fargo (aka Wells Fargo) in 1859.

American Express was founded by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo and J.W. Butterfield in 1850 in Buffalo, NY. Just two years later, Wells and Fargo would also start Wells Fargo & Co. Together they founded two of the most iconic companies in American History. American Express Stock Certificates signed by John Butterfield are very hard to come by. Butterfield was also the founder of the Utica and Waterville Railroad, the Butterfield Overland Mail Company and became the mayor of Utica, NY.

John Butterfield signed this stock certificate as Vice-President and William Fargo signed as Secretary.
