Description Extended Information

This Ambergris Consolidated Mining Company stock certificate was issued in 1929 and is hand-signed by Jerome J. Day as Vice President. Jerome James Day was a member of famous mining family the Days and made a fortune in silver mining which thrust him into a prolific career in business and politics. He married Lucy Mix of Moscow, Idaho in 1902 and he became the president of Moscow State Bank and president and major stockholder of the Idaho National Harvester Company. He was Moscow's first millionaire. He was part of the University of Idaho's Board of Regents.

Day served as the state senator for three terms (1909-1912). He also became president of the Tamarack & Custer Consolidated Co and organized the Bank of Northport. He was president of the Idaho Mining Association and a leading spokesman for the Idaho mining industry. Most of their vast mining holdings were part of Day Mines Inc.

His home in Moscow, built in 1904, was one of the cities grandest residences located in the Fort Russell neighborhood. The 24 room mansion was built by architect Henry Nelson Black and still stands proudly today.

The Ambergris Consolidated Mining Company was located next to the Day's Hercules Mine. A settlement of a legal conflict over the claims of the Ambergris Consolidated was settled in 1908. It required the Hercules to allow the working of the Ambergris mine through a tunnel on its property. In return, the Day family received 1,516,000 new shares of stock which gave the Days majority control of the Ambergris Consolidated Mining Company.
