Description Extended Information

This Bearer Bond was issued by the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Company in 1880 for $1000 payable in 1910. It is hand-signed by the company president H.C. Nutt (Colonel Henry Clay Nutt). Henry Clay was lifelong railroad man who served as a rodman, asst engineer and conductor. He was the Chief Engineer of the construction of the Peoria & Oquawka Railroad as well as the Chief Engineer of the Council Bluffs & St. Josephs. He was president of the Atlantic and Pacific from 1881 to 1889. He served under Samuel J. Kirkwood, Governor of Iowa, in the Civil War. We was promoted to the rank of Colonel.

The railway was founded in 1866 as a transcontinental railroad connecting Springfield, Missouri to Van Buren, Arkansas to California. The middle portion was never constructed so the western half became part of the St. Louis San Francisco Railway and the Eastern portion part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
