About the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O)
The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad in the United States,
running from 1828 to 1987. It carried both people and freight for a set fee—helping
transform American travel and shipping.
Route & Impact
Over time, the B&O expanded to more than 6,000 route miles across 13 Eastern and Midwestern states,
plus Washington, D.C.—building a major transportation corridor for the region.
Built to Beat the Canals
The railroad’s core mission was to connect the port of Baltimore to the Ohio River, competing directly
with rival canals and securing valuable western trade routes.
From Early Steam to Civil War Service
- Chartered: February 28, 1827
- Early operations: construction began July 4, 1828; initial line opened in 1830 using horses, later shifting to steam
- Steam breakthrough: tested Peter Cooper’s Tom Thumb in 1830 to prove steam could handle the terrain
- Ohio River reached: Wheeling in 1853
- Civil War: served as a critical Union supply and troop transit line
Long Legacy (and Big History)
The B&O experienced financial hardship, including bankruptcy in 1896, followed by reorganization.
It was later bought by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1963, and then fully merged into
the CSX network by 1987.
