J.W. Garrett
John Work Garrett was an influential American railroad executive who served as the president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company (B&O) from 1858 to 1884. Born on July 21, 1820, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of a prominent businessman and entered the railroad industry early in his career. Under his leadership, the B&O expanded significantly, becoming a vital transportation link between the East Coast and the Midwest, and played a critical role during the Civil War by transporting troops and supplies. Garrett was known for his innovative approaches to railroad management and infrastructure development, contributing to the modernization of the U.S. rail system. He passed away on September 25, 1884, leaving a lasting legacy in the transportation industry.
