Description Extended Information

This Borden Specimen Note Certificate was printed in 1979. It paid 9 3/8% and was due in 2009. Borden, Inc. was founded in 1857 in Connecticut by Gail Borden, Jr. There primary product was condensed milk. The company struggled until the civil war where it thrived selling condensed milk to the Union Army. Borden expanded into the consumer business with milk, being the first to use glass bottles. Borden was once the largest dairy producer in the U.S. After struggling in the 1990s they were purchased by a private equity firm in 1995 and their various brands were divested and sold off.

Added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average 1930.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
