Description Extended Information

This Boston Elevated Railways Company Stock Certificate was issued in 1913 and is hand signed by the company president.

The Boston Elevated Railways Company, formed in 1894, was a pivotal player in the development of public transportation in Boston, Massachusetts. It initially consolidated several existing streetcar lines and began operating elevated trains, which were essential for easing congestion in the rapidly growing city. The company’s network expanded over the years, with significant projects like the construction of the Tremont Street Subway, the first underground subway in the U.S., completed in 1897. Throughout the early 20th century, the company evolved its services, transitioning from elevated trains to a more comprehensive system that included subways and surface transit. In 1964, the company was absorbed into the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), which continues to operate the transit system today.
