This scarce Chicago and Erie Railroad Company $1000 Gold Bearer Bond Certificate was issued in 1890 and is hand-signed by the company president. Founded as the Chicago, Continental and Baltimore Railway in 1871, it provided a line between Columbus, Ohio and Chicago. It went through bankruptcy in 1890 after financial problems after a collision that killed 10 people. They emerged from bankruptcy as the Chicago and Erie Railroad. They were purchased by the Erie Railroad in 1895.
