Disney Dollar (1991) — Mickey Mouse (Front) & Magic Kingdom (Reverse)

Add a little theme-park magic to your collection with this Disney Dollar, issued in 1991. It features Mickey Mouse on the front and the Magic Kingdom on the reverse—an instant conversation starter for Disney fans and scripophily/currency collectors alike.

These weren’t “fantasy play money.” Disney Dollars were official corporate scrip from The Walt Disney Company—created to be collected and spent inside Disney parks and Disney stores.

What Makes Disney Dollars So Collectible?

  • Official Disney corporate scrip introduced by The Walt Disney Company
  • Fixed 1:1 value with U.S. currency for spending inside Disney locations
  • Designed for display: classic characters + iconic park imagery
  • Great theme-park history—introduced in 1987 and sold until 2016
  • Beautiful security detail (engraving-style printing, microprinting, serials, and more)

Brief History of Disney Dollars

Launch: May 5, 1987

Disney Dollars debuted when the first bills—$1 and $5—appeared at Disneyland on May 5, 1987. The artwork featured Mickey Mouse, and the early notes were signed by Scrooge McDuck as treasurer.

Expansion Across Disney

  • Late 1987: Walt Disney World adopted Disney Dollars
  • 1992: Disney Stores began carrying/trading Disney Dollars
  • More denominations: including $10, and later a commemorative $50 note in 2005 for Disneyland’s 50th anniversary

Security Features (Real-Note Style)

Disney Dollars were printed on special cotton paper and used multiple banknote-like security features, such as:

  • Real banknote engraving
  • Serial numbers
  • Microprinting
  • Watermarks
  • Glitter “pixie dust”

Discontinuation: 2016

As cashless payments expanded, Disney stopped printing new Disney Dollars in 2016. Legacy bills are still technically redeemable at face value inside parks.
