This Illinois Central Railroad Stock certificate was issued in 1958. The Illinois Central was the first land grant railroad in the country.  In 1850 President Millard Fillmore signed the land grant for the construction of the railroad and it was chartered by the state of Illinois in 1851.  When completed in 1856 it was the longest railroad in the country.  Eventually the railroad stretched from Chicago to New Orleans and west to Omaha.  In 1988 the railroad was purchased by the Canadian National Railway.  Issued in the 1950s.  Vignette features a modern train engine and an old fashioned steam engine.
