This rare J.L. Thompson Oil Corporation stock certificate was issued in 1922. J.L. Thompson was based out of Mexia, Texas. In 1920, Albert Humphrey struck oil in Limestone Country, Texas and Mexia became the center of one the largest oil fields in the world. The population of Mexia increased 10 fold almost overnight and in 1922 produced over 35 million barrels of crude per year. With no rules regarding production, the oil field was essentially pumped dry by the mid 1920s.
