Description Extended Information

This Knox and Lincoln Railroad Company stock certificate is un-issued from the 1870s. The Knox and Lincoln began service in 1871 to Rockland, Maine by using a ferry to cross the Kennebec River between Bath and Woolrich. The railroad was originally chartered in 1849 to build a railway from the Portland and Kennebec Railroad to Rockland, but construction was more expensive than expected. In 1891, the Maine Central Railroad leased the Knox and Lincoln Railroad, and in 1901 it became the Maine Central's Rockland Branch.
