Description Extended Information

This Mellon Bank Corporation Specimen Note Certificate was from 1989 for 8 7/8% and due in 1998. The vignette features Judge Thomas Mellon, the family patriarch and founder of Mellon Bank in 1869 as T. Mellon & Son's Bank in Pittsburg.

In 1902 T. Mellon & Sons became Mellon National Bank and through various mergers and reorganizations it became Mellon Bank Corporation. In the late 1990s Mellon Bank Corporation became Mellon Financial Corp and subsequently exited the retail banking market selling off those assets to Citizens Financial Group. Mellon would merge with the Bank of New York in 2006 to create one of the world's larges asset management and financial services firms now known as BNY Mellon.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
