This Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Rail-Road company stock certificate was signed by president Edwin C. Litchfield in 1857. Litchfield was a lawyer and businessman from Brooklyn, NY. Today his mansion Litchfield Villa or "Grace Hill" sits in Prospect Park in Brooklyn. It's located at Prospect Park West and 5th Street and was listed on National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

The Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad was formed in 1855 with the merger of the Michigan Southern Rail Road with the Northern Indiana Railroad. In 1869 the this railroad merged with the Lake Shore Railway to form the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway. By 1877 Cornelius Vanderbilt and his New York Central and Hudson River Railroad had taken over the majority of stock in the railroad and in 1914 the two railroads merged to form the New York Central Railroad.
