1998–2005: The NASDAQ–AMEX Market Group Era
The NASDAQ-AMEX Market Group was formed in 1998 when NASD (NASDAQ’s parent company)
merged with the American Stock Exchange (AMEX). The partnership lasted for about seven years,
officially dissolving in 2005 when AMEX members reacquired their exchange.
What Made Each Exchange Unique
-
NASDAQ: founded in 1971 by NASD, NASDAQ became the world’s first electronic stock market
and later grew into a technology-driven global marketplace.
-
AMEX: with roots in the 1800s, AMEX historically focused on small- to mid-cap stocks
and helped pioneer ETFs in 1993.
After the dissolution of the joint group, AMEX was acquired by the NYSE Group in 2008 and
operates today as NYSE American.
