Description Extended Information

This scarce Philadelphia and West Chester Traction Company Stock Certificate was issued in 1906 and hand-signed by the company president. The Philadelphia & West Chester Traction Company (PWCTC) was founded in 1895 to build a horse-drawn trolley line between 63rd Street in Philadelphia and Newtown Square. The line was extended to West Chester in 1898 and eventually became motorized. The PWCTC also consolidated streetcar and bus operations in the early 1930s, which led to a name change in 1936 to the Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Company (PSTC). The PSTC adopted the "Red Arrow Lines" logo as part of a public relations campaign.
