Description Extended Information

This Research-Cottrell specimen stock certificate was printed in 1968. Research-Cottrell was initially founded as a foundation called Research Corporation in 1912 by Frederick Gardner Cottrell, a professor of chemistry at the University of California Berkeley. The intent of the foundation was to bring inventions by educators into the commercial use. The Foundation, funded by royalties paid once inventions were used in commercial applications funded research such as Robert Hutchings Goddard invention of liquid fueled rockets and Ernest Lawrence's invention of the cyclotron which won him a Nobel Prize. The foundation was ordered to be split by the Supreme Court and Research Cottrell was formed to operate east of the Mississippi River.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
