Description Extended Information

This Sherman Lead Company Stock Certificate was signed by mining tycoon Henry L. Day in 1945. Henry Day was educated in mining and geology at the University of California and Harvard University. After his graduation he managed the family mining business with his father Jerome Day. He consolidated their various mining claims to form Day Mines, Inc. and improved operation to be more efficient.

He became active in business and politics and was actively involved with the University of Idaho. He became an active supporter of the Republican Party locally and nationally. He was a leader in the construction of the Wallace Civic Memorial Auditorium, the Camp Fire Girls camp on Lake Coeur d'Alene, and the building of the East Shoshone Hospital in Silverton, Idaho.

The Sherman Lead Company was part of Day Mines, Inc. as a subsidiary of the Day owned Tamarack & Custer. When the Day's took over the company in 1918, Jerome Day was named president. The mine struggled depending on the price of lead until the 1940s when the demand for lead during WWII surged. Henry L. Day took over as president in 1942.
