The iconic Smith, Barney & Co was founded in 1938. They later merged with Harris, Upham & Co in 1975 to form Smith Barney, Harris Upham & Co. The later became known simply as Smith Barney Inc. Their ads became famous in the 1980s with their catch phrase "We make money the old-fashioned way. We earn it."

In subsequent years, the company merged with several other companies including Shearson and EF Hutton. During the financial crisis of 2008 they were ultimately absorbed by Morgan Stanley.

This Smith, Barney Equity Fund stock certificate was issued in the 1960s to the famous financial company which is now part of Morgan Stanley.
