The St. Louis, Alton and Terre Haute Railroad company began as the Terre Haute and Alton Railroad in 1851.  The Belleville and Illinoistown railroad was started in 1852 and the two merged in 1854.  By 1861 this company was in receivership and emerged in 1862 as the St. Louis, Alton and Terre Haute Railroad.  The railroad is generally called the Cairo Short Line and connected St. Louis to New Orleans.  The railroad was lease for 99 years to the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1867.  Unissued share from the 1860s.  Civil war era.  Vignette of a steam train traveling through the country side.
