Description Extended Information

This Tennessee Gas Transmission Company specimen stock certificate was printed in the 1950s. The Tennessee Gas Transmission Company operated natural gas pipelines ranging from Texas to West Virginia. In 1966 they changed their name to Tenneco, Inc. and expanded into other businesses including the manufacturing of mufflers and catalytic converters, and what they are most famously known for, gasoline service stations. They also became the majority owner of J.I. Case and merged them with David Brown Tractors and the agriculture division of International Harvester. They would become a huge conglomerate with business ranging from oil and gas to shipbuilding and automobiles. They traded on the NYSE until 1999 when Apollo took them private.

About Specimens:
Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
