Description Extended Information

This rare Banded Peak Land and Mining Company stock certificate is from the 1890s and is un-issued. Banded Peak Land and Mine Company owned sixty thousand acres of the Northern portion of what was known as the Tierra Amarilla Land Grant in Colorado. It was located on the western slope of the Conejos range. Banded Peak has an elevation of 12,778.

The Tierra Amarilla Land Grant, which consisted of 929 square miles of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado was awarded to Manuel Martinez and his offspring in 1832. The grant was settled by Hispanics and its original inhabitants, the Ute Indians, were forced to leave. When the U.S. annexed New Mexico in 1848, most of the land was basically stolen by wealthy speculators who knew how to work the system. One of these speculators, Thomas Catron - a member of the Santa Fe Ring a New Mexico Senator, acquired almost all the land. This made him the largest land owner in the United States. He acquired over 3 million acres including 600,000 acres from the Tierra Amarilla Land Grant. Ownership of this land is still debated and contested today.
