Buttonwood Agreement & Tontine Coffee House Mural Pages — Ezra Winter Framed Set (1930)

These pages are two of the six great panels in the main banking room of the Bank of the Manhattan Trust Company (became JPMorgan Chase) building at 40 Wall Street, a site occupied since the company’s founding in 1799.

The First New York Stock Exchange: Mural by Ezra Winter

The Buttonwood Agreement was signed on May 17, 1792 by 24 New York City stockbrokers and merchants under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street (near what is now 68 Wall Street). It layed the groundwork of what would become the New York Stock Exchange. The stock exchange members shown under the famous Buttonwood tree in 1792 include Leonard Bleecker, Andrew Barclay, Charles McEvers, Augustine H. Lawrence, and David Reedy.

The Tontine Coffee House: Mural by Ezra Winter

The Tontine Coffee House is widely considered the place of the first New York Stock Exchange. It evolved into a central meeting spot for stock brokers. In 1792, the Buttonwood Agreement was signed by 24 brokers on Wall Street near the Coffee House.

In the foreground are Governor John Jay and Robert H. Livingston. On the steps stands John Broome, and the central figure on the balcony in the background is Stephen Baker, the great-grandfather of the president of the Bank of Manhattan Trust Company at the time this was made in 1930.
