This Cincinnati, Washington and Baltimore Railroad Stock Certificate is signed by Civil War Brigade General Orland Smith. Smith was a commander in the Union Army that took the hill in the Battle of Wauhatchie that now bears his name. After the war, he became an executive for the Railroad.

Originally formed as the Belpre and Cincinnati Railroad in 1845 and then the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad, it was absorbed by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O). In 1882 when taken over by the B&O it's name was changed to the Cincinnati, Washington, and Baltimore Railroad and then again to the B&O in 1889. Issued in the 1880s. Vignette on the right features a steam engine at the station with a nearby horse drawn carriage.
