Description Extended Information

The Delaware Railroad Company was originally charted in 1836 to John M. Clayton, the future U.S. Secretary of State.  Due to the Depression of 1837-1839 the railroad was not built.  The Charter was renewed in 1848 and was operating by 1852.  During the Civil War the railroad was used to ship supplies south to the Confederacy.  In about 1881 the Delaware Railroad Company came under the control of the Pennsylvania Railroad.  Issued in the 1910s.  Hand signed.  Vignette features a steam engine passing a train depot.
