The United Illuminating Company dates back to 1881 as the New Haven Electric Lighting Company. In 1899 it was renamed The United Illuminating Company and provided electric lighting to the City of New Haven Connecticut as well as Bridgeport and the surrounding communities. They expanded their electric services over the years to include Nuclear power plants. Today they are known as The UIL Holding Company.
