Walt Disney Company: A Quick History of the Magic

The Walt Disney Company is an American multinational media and entertainment powerhouse headquartered in Burbank, California. From films and TV to theme parks and streaming, Disney has built a global ecosystem of beloved brands and unforgettable experiences.

The Early Years & Mickey Mouse (1923–1928)

Founded by brothers Walt and Roy O. Disney on October 16, 1923, the business began as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. After losing the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt and animator Ub Iwerks created Mickey Mouse, who debuted in the 1928 short Steamboat Willie—the first cartoon with fully synchronized sound.

Golden Age of Animation (1937–1950s)

In 1937, Disney released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the world’s first full-length cell-animated feature. It became a massive success and paved the way for classics like Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi.

Theme Parks & Expansion (1955–1966)

On July 17, 1955, Walt Disney opened Disneyland in Anaheim, CA—helping establish the modern theme park industry. After Walt’s death in 1966, his brother Roy oversaw the opening of Walt Disney World in Orlando in 1971.

The Disney Renaissance (1989–1999)

After a commercial dip, Disney rebounded in the late 1980s with a run of acclaimed hits like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King.

Modern Era (2000s–Present)

Disney became an even bigger media force in the 2000s and beyond, launching its flagship streaming platform Disney+ in 2019.

Investor Milestone: Dow Jones Inclusion

Added to the Dow Jones Industrial Average May 6, 1991.

Specimen Stock Certificates: What Makes Them Special?

Specimen certificates are issued/archived by printers and companies as perfect examples of the stock issue. They’re often identified by one or more of the following:

  • “Specimen” stamp
  • Stamped holes spelling “specimen”
  • Series/serial details such as a series of zeros (or sometimes no serial number)
  • They can represent a design that was never actually issued

Because these attributes make them distinct, many enthusiasts collect specimens as a separate and highly collectible category of scripophily.
