J H Miller of Hawthorn owned extensive mining, mercantile and agricultural interest in Nevada and was the largest operator of mining properties in the Divide District. He was appointed by the Governor to the first Board of County Commissioners of the newly formed County of Mineral, Nevada. JH Miller was said to be synonymous with mining success in Nevada.
His interests, including the Treadwell Divide, included the Consolidated, Mowhawk Divide, Florence Divide, Smuggler Divide, East Divide Extension, Eureka Divide, Mispah Divide, Divide Charter, and the Grimes, Hull City, Belmont, Portland, Black Hawk, High, And Horseshoe Divides.
