This Western Maryland Railway Company stock certificate was issued in 1917. The Western Maryland Railway was chartered in 1852 as the Baltimore, Carroll and Frederick Railroad. It's name was changed in 1853 to Western Maryland Rail Road. In 1908 the railway went into bankruptcy and the Western Maryland Company was formed to purchase the assets out of bankruptcy which happened in 1910. In the 1970's and 1980's the company was owned by Chessie Systems and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) and eventually CSX Transportation.
