The Canada Southern Railway was founded in 1868 as the Erie and Niagara Extension Railway and changed it's name to the Canada Southern Railway later in the same year. The line was leased to the Michigan Central Railroad and later subleased to the New York Central Railroad and its successors Penn Central and Conrail. The railroad was purchased by the Canadian National Railway and the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1985.
