Description Extended Information

This Osage Mutual Oil & Refining Company of Oklahoma stock certificate was issued in 1918 and is hand-signed by the company's vice president. Osage Mutual Oil was located in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Pawhuska was named after the Osage Chief Paw-Hiu-Skah. The Osage Nation established its tribal government in Pawhuska in 1872 when its reservation was established in Indian Territory. During the oil boom, Pawhuska was the site of oil and gas leases under the "Million Dollar Elm". It would also be one of the primary shooting locations of the movie, Killers of the Flower Moon.

The Osage Nation was forced from their homes in modern-day Kansas into what was then known as Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. In the early 1900s, oil was discovered on their land. The Osage owned communal mineral rights and many became quite wealthy after the discovery. Martin Scorsese's 2023 film, Killers of the Flower Moon staring Leonardo DiCaprio, depicted this discovery and the following struggle of the Osage Nation. This time was known as the Reign of Terror as many were manipulated and even murdered by outsiders who wanted to take over their oil and wealth.
