Description Extended Information

This rare specimen certificate from Shearson Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. is from 1983 and comes with a Proof Request Order from 1985. Shearson was founded in 1902 and underwent several mergers with well known companies including American Express. They merged with Lehman Brothers in 1984. We believe this certificate was developed during the merger with a subsequent proof request that followed in 1985. Super rare to find these documents together.

The certificate has some staple holes where it was attached to the Proof Request and some rough edges but still show great and would frame up very well. Rare find!

Shearson Lehman merged with E.F. Hutton in 1988. Subsequent mergers from Primerica/ Citigroup and then finally Smith Barney eventually the Shearson name got removed. Now, they are known purely as Smith Barney.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
