1886 CBOT Membership Ticket – Edward S. Washburn | Field, Lindley & Co. (Abner M. Wright Signature)

Own a notable piece of Chicago’s financial history with this authentic 1886 Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) membership ticket issued to Edward S. Washburn of Field, Lindley & Co. The ticket bears the hand-signed endorsement of CBOT President Abner M. Wright and features the back engraving of the newly completed CBOT building (finished 1885), then the tallest in Chicago. It is also signed by CBOT Secretary George F. Stone.

Edward S. Washburn, a partner at Field, Lindley & Co., went on to leadership roles with major railroads in Kansas City and was a prominent member of the Call Board (Chicago Provision and Grain Stock Board), reflecting the vibrant trading scene of the 1880s.

Field, Lindley & Co. helped shape New York’s brokerage landscape in the late 19th century. While the firm faced insolvency and litigation in 1891, this ticket captures its prominence during the 1880s and its ties to Chicago’s CBOT ecosystem.

Abner M. Wright, CBOT President (1886–1887), played a pivotal role in enforcing market integrity during the era of bucket shops and evolving exchange governance. This ticket is a tangible link to Wright’s leadership and the ongoing evolution of Chicago’s financial markets.

George F. Stone served as CBOT secretary during a formative period for the exchange, helping manage governance, quotations, and member communications. George F. Stone served as the Secretary of the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) for 28 years, a tenure that began in 1884 and lasted until his death in 1912. Stone was one of the most influential figures in the board's history, overseeing its operations during the "Gilded Age" of massive expansion in the grain and commodities markets.
