Description Extended Information

This rare Bed Bath & Beyond specimen stock certificate was printed in 1992. Bed Bath & Beyond was a nationwide retailer that just declared bankruptcy. They got caught up in the "meme" stock frenzy when Ryan Cohen (former Chewy founder and CEO of GameStop) wrote an open letter to board demanding the company be sold or broken up. Cohen received 3 board seats. A class action suit was brought against the company and its CFO would jump from a NYC high-rise apartment. The suit alleged that BBBY had become a pump and dump scheme.

Bed Bath & Beyond stock tanked as they shuttered more and more locations. They filed Chapter 11 on April 23rd, 2023. They were delisted from the Nasdaq shortly after. Stores permanently closed on July 30, 2023. Overstock.com bought the Bed Bath & Beyond name in a bankruptcy auction for $21.5 million. Overstock changed their name to Bed Bath and Beyond.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
