Description Extended Information

Bethlehem Steel Corporation's history dates back to 1857 as the Saucona Iron Company in Bethlehem, PA. There name changed to Bethlehem Rolling Mill and Iron Company, then Bethlehem Iron Company and Finally Bethlehem Steel Company in 1899. At one point they were owned by U.S. Steel Corp and the United States Shipbuilding Company for a short period of time in the early 1900s.

Bethlehem Steel was one of the large steel manufacturers in the world. Their steel was used to build the Chryslers Building, Golden Gate Bridge, Empire State Building Madison Square Garden and more. Their steel was also instrumental during the World Wars. Financial trouble ensued during the 1990s with the downturn in the Steel industry and they declared bankruptcy in 2001.

Bethlehem Steel was one of the early Dow Jones Industrial Average components added October, 1928. This Bethlehem Steel Specimen Bond was printed in 1984.

Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company’s stock issue. Specimen’s can be identified by their “specimen” stamp, stamped holes spelling “specimen”, or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimens can also represent a design that was never issued. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate rarer than the issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily.
