This Boston Railroad Holding Company was issued to William K. Vanderbilt in 1913. William was the son of railroad barron Cornelius Vanderbilt and was a successful business man in in own right. William K. took over the family's business interests after his father's death and played a crucial role in expanding the New York Central Railroad system. His leadership helped modernize the railroad industry, implementing innovations that improved efficiency and profitability.

The Boston Railroad Holdings Company was formed in 1909 to hold the shares of the Boston and Maine Railroad. The shares were held within the holding company as a result of a take over attempt by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad company which was was determined to be illegal under Massachusetts law.
