Certificate of Deposit (CD) Futures (1981 Backstory)

Historically, the CBOT and CME launched Certificate of Deposit (CD) Futures in 1981.

Here’s what made CD Futures interesting—and what made them a “big deal” for traders:

  • What it was: Financial derivatives based on large-denomination, negotiable domestic bank Certificates of Deposit—often $100,000 or more.
  • Why they existed: They gave banks and institutional investors a tool to hedge against fluctuating short-term interest rates.

And here’s why this contract eventually faded from the spotlight:

  • Why they disappeared: Domestic CD futures were eclipsed by Eurodollar Futures (on the CME) and U.S. Treasury Futures (on the CBOT).
  • The key advantage: Eurodollars—U.S. dollar-denominated deposits held in banks outside the United States—proved far more liquid and popular, making domestic CD futures obsolete.
