The Enron case starkly shows a disconnect between stated principles and real practices. During the late 1990s into 2001, aggressive off-balance-sheet financing and questionable accounting—like the use of special purpose entities and mark-to-market valuations—masked true liabilities and overstated profits. Led by CEO Jeffrey Skilling and CFO Andrew Fastow, many obligations remained undisclosed. The company filed for bankruptcy in December 2001, wreaking havoc on employees and investors and prompting investigations of senior management. The collapse also toppled its longtime auditor, Arthur Andersen, and helped spark sweeping reforms such as the Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002 to strengthen oversight and financial reporting.
