Under CEO Jeffrey Skilling and CFO Andrew Fastow, many obligations stayed off the books. The company entered bankruptcy in December 2001, harming workers and investors and triggering investigations of top executives. The failure also ended Arthur Andersen’s tenure as auditor and helped drive major reforms like the Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002 to enhance corporate governance and financial transparency.
