In the late 1990s through 2001, aggressive off-balance-sheet financing and questionable accounting—such as SPVs and mark-to-market methods—masked true liabilities and inflated reported profits. Under CEO Jeffrey Skilling and CFO Andrew Fastow, many obligations remained hidden. The company entered bankruptcy in December 2001, devastating employees and investors and triggering investigations of senior leaders. The collapse also ended Arthur Andersen’s tenure as auditor and helped spur major reforms like the 2002 Sarbanes–Oxley Act to strengthen corporate governance and financial transparency.
